Alumni Mentor Program

About the Program

The Macaulay Honors College Alumni Mentoring Program offers alumni the opportunity to give back to the Macaulay community by sharing their experiences and expertise with current Macaulay Honors College students and helping them transition from Macaulay to graduate programs or professional careers. The Alumni Mentoring Program will strive to match alumni with current students who share similar interests or aspire to be in similar academic or professional fields. Mentors will:

  • Give students recognition and encouragement;
  • Provide advice on how to balance education, career, and extracurricular activities;
  • Offer perspectives on long-term career planning and/or graduate school education;
  • Share career, academic, cultural, and/or social interests.

Benefits for Alumni Mentors

In addition to the rewards inherent in the mentor/mentee relationship, mentors may enjoy additional benefits, such as:

  • Events to meet other alumni, professors, and students;
  • Professional development;
  • Networking opportunities;
  • Connections with professionals who may serve as mentors to alumni.

Timing and Activities

The program will be launched in the fall of 2009 with a kick-off event to give mentors and mentees the opportunity to meet one another. Then, over the course of the academic year, each pair will be encouraged to spend time together regularly. Staff at Macaulay´s central office will be available to assist both alumni and students in fostering this relationship.

Mentoring opportunities are open to Macaulay alumni in all professions and programs throughout the country and across the globe. It is strongly encouraged that mentors and mentees meet in person, but it is also possible to communicate over the phone or through e-mail. All of the laptops that have been provided to current Macaulay students are equipped with webcams, supplying the students with video chat capabilities. Mentors may also:

  • Conduct practice interviews for mentees;
  • Meet with students for informational interviews;
  • Allow a mentee to job-shadow;
  • Host students for graduate school preview, where appropriate;
  • Hire students as interns for their company or employ them as research assistants.

Expectations

Mentor training will be provided. Mentors and mentees should talk, email, or meet at least once per month. Mentors and mentees will schedule these interactions based on their own personal calendars. Additionally, mentors will be asked to provide feedback on their experiences as mentors.
