Macaulay Honors College

Hunter College

Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side a few blocks from Central Park, Hunter College’s 68th Street campus includes a nine-story library with full wireless internet access, a language laboratory, and sophisticated academic computing services. The Hunter College Sportsplex, which has five gymnasia, is one of the premier sports centers in the metropolitan area.

The college includes four schools: Arts and Sciences; Education; Health Professions; and Social Work. At Hunter, University Scholars begin their studies within the School of Arts and Sciences, where they benefit from extensive personalized advising, intellectual and social contact with Hunter’s distinguished faculty, access to internships and study abroad opportunities, and federally funded programs in undergraduate research. Recent members of the program have been awarded such prestigious honors as the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, the Beinecke Scholarship, the Jeannette K. Watson Fellowship, and the Woodrow Wilson Summer Institute Scholarship. Many University Scholars at Hunter conduct research and study abroad.

Hunter offers University Scholars special honors sections of courses, many of which fulfill Hunter’s general education requirements. Scholars may also undertake independent studies with honors faculty. An Honors Center provides students with advanced instructional technology and wireless internet access and printing. The Honors Center also has a lounge where University Scholars may gather to work and socialize, or meet with advisors. After graduation, Hunter’s University Scholars have entered prestigious doctoral programs in fields as diverse as Sociology, Medicine, Law, and Ethnomusicology. As University Scholars finish their sophomore year, they can select from a variety of upper-division honors studies, and they can apply for admission to the distinguished Thomas Hunter Honors Program, a Hunter College honors program that offers topical interdisciplinary seminars and academic concentrations designed to meet students’ individual interests.

Finally, all University Scholars at Hunter College are given the choice of either a free dormitory room at the Brookdale Campus, as long as Hunter maintains a residence hall, or a yearly stipend.
