The 2008 Kaplan/Newsweek guidebook How to Get into College named Queens one of the nation’s “hottest” and “most interesting colleges.” In praising the college, the authors note that “The school’s biggest claim to fame is the several generations of lawyers, doctors and other professionals who could not afford the Ivies and say Queens changed their lives.” Queens College offers world-class faculty, vibrant student life, and a beautifully landscaped 77-acre campus framed by the skyline of Manhattan, just 10 miles away. University Scholars can choose from more than 75 majors and 20 interdisciplinary programs in four academic divisions: Arts and Humanities; Education; Mathematics and Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences. Queens is also home to the Aaron Copland School of Music, the Godwin-Ternbach Museum, the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and the Kupferberg Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.

Macaulay Honors College draws on the wealth of resources at Queens. University Scholars begin their college experience with an honors freshman English course and colloquium, in addition to the interdisciplinary Macaulay Honors College seminars. In subsequent years, Scholars choose among a variety of challenging academic opportunities, including honors courses in the humanities, mathematical and natural sciences, and social sciences, and preprofessional programs in health sciences, medicine, neuroscience, dentistry, law, business, and journalism. Faculty and students often work closely on research projects and sometimes present their findings at national conferences or publish them in academic journals.

Students at Queens College come from around the corner and around the world. University Scholars enjoy a comfortable and lively lounge in the new Honors Center and an Honors area of the Humanities Library, and they have their own student association.

Lauren Talerman ’08 (Political Science and Anthropology double major, Arabic minor, Queens College) Lauren intends to pursue a PhD in Middle Eastern Studies. She is is fluent in Hebrew and Spanish, and is in the process of learning Arabic. She is a National Hispanic Scholar, a Mellon Scholar and a Kenan Scholar. She is the News Editor for the Queens College newspaper, co-edits the Journal of Jewish Studies, and serves in student government. Lauren was awarded the NSEP/David L. Boren Scholarship for Undergraduate Study Abroad in Egypt, where she lived for seven weeks completing coursework at the University of Cairo. “It was an opportunity to gain information and insight into the politics of the region,” Lauren said. She just returned from spending the summer in Morocco, where she gathered data for her senior thesis.
