Macaulay in the Workplace

Offering an Internship to a Macaulay Student

Learning outside of the classroom is a vital component of the Macaulay Honors College experience

Macaulay Honors College students make exceptional interns, adding real value while acquiring useful skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

Our students are among the best and the brightest in New York. They are selected for the highly competitive Macaulay Honors College Program at CUNY based on their impressive records of academic achievement, leadership potential, and high levels of engagement and motivation. Furthermore, Macaulay’s emphasis on service, global learning, and community engagement—not to mention hard work and commitment— ensures that these interns will be assets to your workplace. They are among the most diverse, multi-cultural, and often multi-lingual candidates you will ever meet.

Macaulay students have already interned with a wide range of dynamic firms and organizations throughout New York—and beyond—including the American Ballet Theatre, JPMorgan Chase, the Federal Reserve, Forbes Media, Maimonides Medical Center, the United Nations, HBO, New York Life Insurance, New York City Council, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Duane Morris. Others have participated in exciting biomedical and other research projects. Given the wide range of academic interests represented by the student body, it is likely that your needs will be matched by the skills, knowledge, and interests of a Macaulay student.

Macaulay Honors College’s Definition of an Internship

To help ensure internships of the highest quality, we work with potential employers to develop opportunities that are carefully monitored, substantive previews of a career or profession with clear learning goals for the student. Such internships incorporate a rigorous selection process; goal setting at the outset; substantive work assignments; and dedicated training, supervision, and evaluation. In return, you can expect the work of the Macaulay Honors College intern to add real value to your enterprise.

Rigorous Selection Process

Perhaps you already have an internship program in your organization and therefore have developed an internship description. Or maybe you are just now exploring how an intern position might be of help to your enterprise.

Wherever you are in the process, we can help you develop an experience that will be mutually beneficial for you and the intern. Here’s how we can help match you with the right students:

  • Assisting in defining or creating an internship description
  • Screening résumés
  • Interviewing students
  • Selecting appropriate candidates to advance
  • Guiding candidates into your established application procedure

Goals and Nature of Work

Just as with your regular staff, performance management practices are key to the success of the internship both for you and the student. You should clearly discuss goals and expectations prior to and at the start of the internship as part of a formal training and orientation process. Dedicated supervisors should continually review performance against those goals. We are happy to guide you in the development of these standards.

While all entry-level positions involve clerical work, you should limit such tasks to 35% of the total workload. Internships are also learning experiences; tasks should be varied, involve decision-making and engage and develop the intern’s abilities.

Value-Added Activities and Experiences

Research shows that the best internship engagements offer experiences beyond the formal internship description.

These have included:

  • Dedicated project(s) to work on during down time
  • Team projects among interns in the company
  • Presentations to staff
  • Opportunities to experience the work of other departments
  • Participation in staff meetings, workshops or outings
  • Increased responsibility as the situation allows

Examples of Substantive Tasks

  • Research
  • Copyediting and writing
  • Creating a website
  • Designing publications
  • Developing procedures
  • Performing lab tests
  • Interviewing patients

Macaulay students are much more than high academic achievers. I have not met a Macaulay student who does not strive to exceed expectations. I have also never met a Macaulay student who is not deeply involved with several communities inside and outside of their school. These students are real deal New York City. Most are first generation Americans. They are not only multi-talented but they are also hungry for knowledge, experience and are compelled to serve their local communities. I would hire a qualified Macaulay intern over an Ivy Leaguer any day of the week.
-Media Industry

[Our Macaulay intern] was consistently eager to do everything she could to help out, and always had a positive attitude. She really invested herself in our organization, and became a part of our team. It was a pleasure to work with her this summer, and we can only hope to develop such a successful relationship with any future interns.
-Local government

This past summer, our firm hosted four Macaulay students, one of whom had just completed her first year of law school. We also recently hired a Macaulay graduate in a full time paralegal position. We sought and hired these incredible young individuals since each has a unique combination of ingenuity, determination and work ethic, but without any sense of entitlement. They arrived each day completely self-motivated to handle the assigned matters and never ceased to invigorate each person with whom they worked. Our summer interns were sorely missed when they left but they have undoubtedly started a path for other gifted students to follow in their steps. We fully expect Macaulay graduates to become attorneys in our firm in years to come.
