Internship Experiences

One of the goals of Macaulay Honors College is to prepare students for leadership in their chosen fields. Learning experiences outside of the classroom enrich studies, expand horizons, and provide valuable practical experience to prepare students for their careers. Internships can be transformative experiences.

Why do an internship?

  • Gain hands-on knowledge of a career or profession
  • Gain valuable skills
  • Find out if a career is right (or wrong!) for you
  • Network and make connections with leaders in your chosen field
  • Get a foot in the door—some internships may lead to full-time jobs

What is an internship?

Macaulay Honors College defines an internship as a carefully monitored, substantive preview of a career or profession with clear learning goals. To reach these learning goals, an internship encompasses:

  • Defined expectations
  • Orientation and training
  • Supervision and mentoring
  • Evaluation of the experiences by both University Scholar and Supervisor
  • Real work. While all entry-level positions involve clerical work, your daily tasks in an internship should be substantive, with less than 35% clerical work.

Fall/Spring Semester internships: 10-12 weeks during academic year, 10-20 hours a week Summer internships: Part-time, 6-10 weeks, 15-30 hours a week; Full-time, 6-8 weeks, 31+ hours per week

Requirements

To satisfy the Macaulay requirement for completing an internship, you should:

  • Prepare for internship experiences through resume, interviewing, networking, and other workshops through the local campus and/or Macaulay Honors College.
  • Create and maintain a professional online presence on networking sites such as LinkedIn.
  • Conduct informational interviews with professionals to learn more about a field you are considering.
  • Pursue internship opportunities that advance your academic and professional goals.
  • Identify a possible internship as early as possible, ideally, three months prior to the beginning of the term in which you will intern.
  • Search for internships and research assistantships through the variety of resources listed above.
  • Attend all one-on-one and group interactions with employers, alumni and other professionals (including interviews, information sessions, employer site visits, and fairs) that you have scheduled. Be sure to give advanced notice if you cancel.
  • Discuss the potential internship with your Macaulay Advisor and submit an Internship Learning Agreement once you secure the internship.
  • Withdraw from internship search activities once you have accepted an offer for that particular semester or summer.
  • Contact the Assistant Director of Internships and Professional Development or your Advisor during the internship if you have any concerns about the position or need assistance.
  • Submit an online Internship Evaluation Form.
  • Ensure that your supervisor completes a Supervisor Evaluation Form (coming Spring 2013)
  • Report all internship experiences, even those undertaken subsequent to meeting the Macaulay Honors College requirements.

Reach out to the Internship Coordinator or your Advisor during the internship if you have any concerns about the position or need assistance.

When should I intern?

To explore career options further and to enhance your résumé or portfolio, we highly recommend that you complete more than one internship during your tenure at Macaulay.

How Do I Find an Internship?

Internships can be found through a number of resources, both at Macaulay Honors College and your home campus.

  • Academic departments and professors often organize internships specifically for students on their campus or may have connections with leading companies, organizations, and research centers.
  • Career Services offices on each campus have many internship listings on the web or listed in a portfolio in the office.
  • Throughout the academic year, Macaulay Honors College will advertise internship opportunities specifically for University Scholars on the Macaulay website and through Internship Fairs. Frequently check the internship listings for new positions.
  • Macaulay Honors College and its affiliated student professional clubs also organize visits to major companies so you can learn more about various careers and existing internship programs and requirements.
  • Reach out directly to organizations and companies you are interested in through their “Careers,” Human Resources, and/or volunteer pages.
  • Make use of your contacts, whether friends, classmates, family members, or former employers—let others know you are looking for an internship and what you are hoping to do.
  • Reach out to the Assistant Director of Internships and Professional Development or your Advisor with any questions or if you’re not finding what you’re looking for. See the contacts link at right.

International Internships

Interning internationally can be an excellent opportunity for students to further broaden horizons and obtain a global perspective that is attractive to future employers.

International internships can be found through various company websites.  There are a number of organizations that match students to internships in a variety of fields.

Some examples of organizations are below. Please note that Macaulay Honors College is not affiliated with or endorse these providers:

Cultural Vistas(formerly known as CDS International)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

COINED

Cross Cultural Solutions

Global Experiences

Some international internships may be paid.  Each provider may have a varying fee level.  Macaulay students may be able to use the Opportunities Fund to supplement the experience.  Discuss the position with your Advisor as early as possible and be sure to fill out the CUNY Travel Waiver (required).

Be careful to vet international experiences, particularly from third party companies. For a list of questions to ask, click here.

If you have a question about an international opportunity you found, contact Ofronama.biu@mhc.cuny.edu.

Financing an Internship

Some internships may not provide financial compensation but nonetheless offer significant learning experiences. The Opportunities Fund can be used to cover the cost of an experience that meets the Macaulay Honors College definition of an internship but is unpaid and for which you do not receive academic credit. Additionally, the Opportunities Fund can be used to finance travel expenses associated with internships outside New York City. Speak to your Advisor before applying.

Click here for more information on the Opportunities Fund.
