Student-Alumni Mentoring Program

Student-Alumni Mentoring Program

The Macaulay Honors College Student-Alumni Mentoring Program gives sophomore, juniors, or seniors the opportunity to learn from Macaulay Honors College alumni and receive advice and encouragement while completing their studies and considering or pursuing graduate programs or professional careers. The Student- Alumni Mentoring Program will strive to make matches based on similar academic or professional interests. Macaulay has graduates who are enrolled in medical schools, law schools, graduate schools, and employed in a variety of professional fields.

Students will receive:

  • Recognition and encouragement
  • Advice on how to balance education, career, and extracurricular activities
  • Perspectives on long-term career planning and/or graduate school education
  • A connection with a peer who shares career, academic, cultural, and/or social interests

Possible Mentor-Mentee Activities

  • Check-in phone calls/emails
  • Practice interviews
  • Informational interviews
  • Mentor-mentee job-shadow
  • Visits to graduate school programs or companies
  • Possible match to internship or research experiences at mentor's companies as appropriate

Timing and Activities

The program will be launched in Fall 2009 with a kick-off event to give mentors and mentees the opportunity to meet one another. Then, over the course of the academic year, each pair will be encouraged to spend time together regularly. Staff at Macaulay´s central office will be available to assist both alumni and students in fostering this relationship.

Expectations

Mentors and mentees should talk, email, or meet at least once per month. Mentors and mentees will schedule these interactions based on their own personal calendars. Mentees are expected to be responsive to their mentors and reach out. In addition, mentees will be asked to evaluate the experience.
