Students can only submit an Opportunities Fund Application during one of the two access periods: fall and spring.

You must review all information on the Opportunities Fund webpage prior to filling out an Opportunities Fund application.

You must download and print an Opportunities Fund application appropriate for your request (see Grant Types below), fill it out and submit it to your Macaulay Honors Advisor during an official access period. Your Honors Advisor may set earlier deadlines for you to submit draft applications in order to advise you more effectively.

You must fill in the information on the top of the Opportunities Fund Application Student Check List.  Read each item carefully.  Ascertain which checklist items are relevant to your application (e.g. if you are applying for an internship stipend, you need not complete the tasks listed under Study Abroad.) Complete all relevant tasks, then check off.  If unsure, ask your advisor. Sign and date at the bottom.

The opportunities Fund Application must be submitted as follows: Signed student checklist, Opportunities Fund application, statement of justification, relevant documentation and the Opportunities Fund quiz confirmation.

If your Macaulay Honors Advisor approves your application, he/she will forward it to the Opportunities Fund Committee for review.

The Opportunities Fund Committee consists of all of the Macaulay Honors Advisors from each of the seven participating CUNY colleges, plus the Associate University Dean, the Associate Director of Student Development, and the University Scholarship Coordinator. The Opportunities Fund Committee meets twice a year at the end of each access period and makes final decisions. Please note that applying for funding does not guarantee approval.

Applications are evaluated based on appropriateness of activity, strength of statement, supporting documentation and completed application.

Once the Committee has met and reviewed all applications, the University Scholarship Coordinator will notify you about the status of your application.

If you request funding for international or out-of-state activities (study abroad, internships, research projects or senior theses, professional development, etc.) that are not CUNY sponsored, you must submit the Macaulay Honors College Liability Waiver (SG-Waiver.doc) with your Opportunities Fund Application.

Grant Types

Advances: You may request a grant before a funded activity takes place. This type of application is called an “advance.” If you apply for an advance, you must supply both a detailed budget and advertisements or other material documenting the cost of your proposed activities.

Reimbursements:
You request a grant after you have engaged in an academic activity. This type of application is called a “reimbursement.” However, please be aware that reimbursements for any particular activity are not guaranteed. The Opportunities Fund Committee may deny reimbursement requests for activities that are not adequately justified or properly documented. You will then be liable for any such expenses.

Note: You must request all reimbursements during the first access period following the activity for which you are requesting reimbursement. Late applications for reimbursements (submitted after the first access period following the activity for which reimbursement is being requested) cannot be approved.

IMPORTANT

Incomplete and late applications will not be reviewed.

Opportunities Funds can only be used for items that were approved. If the funds will not be used as appropriated, you must contact your advisor and the University Scholarship Coordinator immediately.

Any funds used for items/activities that were not approved by the Committee must be returned.

All policies are subject to change.
