Really, how many teenagers go out to see theatrical performances? I think many of us agree that we would never have even considered going to one of the many events we went to throughout this course. Macualay really gave us an oportunity to experience New York at its fullest. I know I don't have 50 dollars lying around to spend on these events. Macualay has not only given us free access to these events; the cultural passport allows us to continue to enjoy many other wonderful performances that New York has to offer at a reduced price. Being exposed to the different theatrical arts is an experience that I could neither replace nor supplement. Even our classroom experiences were irreplaceable (though at times I wished they were). For example, how many of us even imagined Johnson telling Yo Mama jokes? We not only learned about the different arts, we learned about each other and ourselves.

Steven, sign your entries from now on so we can all know whose intellectual loquaciousness we are bathing in. And start spelling “Macaulay” correctly or you’ll be charged for your computer.

As for Johnson’s “Yo Mama” jokes, I agree with you that they had a vividness equal to the night we experienced “South Pacific,” just without the melodies.

Note how the poet Marianne Moore spoke of man:

“Among animals, ONE has a sense of humor.
Humor saves a few steps, it saves years.”

This class opened my eyes to all the stuff that goes on in Manhattan. I lived in NYC my entire life and in the last 4 months I was able to truly enjoy what Manhattan has to offer. Like Steven said [above] most kids our age don’t have the money to attend an event in Lincoln Center and so being able to go to Lincoln Center and see some great pieces of Art was like a dream come true.
The events we went to this semester gave me a new sense of freedom. Many of these events ended late (11pm or so) and I usually got home at midnight or later. After the South Pacific Musical I got home like 12:30 AM and it felt so good coming home so late. Now whenever I want to hang out with friends and don’t want to rush back home I just tell my parents Im going to an event at Lincoln Center and the event will end late so I will be home late.

One of the things that shocked me the most was how much fun I had in class. I thought this class will be a very hard class because all the students are Macaulay honor students. After I got the syllabus from Professor Judell I thought he was a mean teacher because on the syllabus it said “ringing cell phones will be thrown out of the window, except my own. If there are no windows in the room, they will be stomped on.” After reading this i was like “please God don’t my friends call while I’m in class.”

After our class discussion on love my entire life changed (literally). I always figured smart kids were quite and would know nothing about love and would never have experienced a relationship. So when I heard everyone talk about love and when I found out that many of my classmates are or have been in a relationship my world was turn upside down.

No doubt the best thing about this class was the Professor. Day in and day out Judell was able to put a smile on all of our faces with his jokes. I was truly amazed with how fast he could come up with a joke.

I’d say more randomness than jokes, but yeah, Professor Judell had some surprisingly quick jokes at times.

I honestly enjoyed this class tremendously. I was able to learn and see things that I never thought I would see. I thought I would be old when I would finally go to an opera or a musical. Especially being that I was born and raised in NYC and never went to a Broadway show was a bit sad. Even though I know that all the Macaulay students have to take this Arts In NYC course, Professor Judell made it very interesting. I doubt any of the other campuses were able to have a professor like Judell. I actually have a lot of friends at the other campuses, and they all hate their CHC class. They say that its really boring and they hate going to the shows and operas on random days of the week. But, Professor Judell’s jelly beans surely did make those shows more enjoyable. We should be grateful for having Professor Judell. Although he made fun of all of us, it was one of the best parts of the class. I honestly enjoyed waking up on Monday and Wednesday mornings to go his class because I enjoyed our discussions, and Professor Judells jokes.

I’d like to think that I was pretty culturally aware prior to taking this class, but I must say that Arts in NYC was an enjoyable and relevant course. There weren’t too many academic pressures, and guidelines were flexible, which was very important to me as an architecture student. After staying awake for countless hours working in Shepard Hall, it was never a big deal to show up to this class.

I’ve recently seen friends from back home who are totally jealous that I was able to take a course where we learned about New York City and traveled to all these amazing cultural institutions.
