My favorite event that we've attended so far, although they've all been AMAZING, has definitely been going to see La Traviata. It was incredible. The Metropolitan Opera House is one of my most favorite places in the world. Every time I even walk by, the titillation, and the sheer awe i feel...is incomparable.
Getting dressed up and walking up those grand, luxuriously red-carpeted stairs is something surreal. The atmosphere is sophisticated, elegant, and dignified. The opera holds an old-world glamor that is difficult to come by nowadays. Everything is beautiful, magnificent, and fierce.
The opera is unique int hat it is able to combines so many arts so splendidly. It is a stunning blend of theater, music, and poetry. In Capriccio, by Richard Strauss, the theme revolves around the question of whether words or music is more important. Although many believe that the vocal music outshines everything else, I believe that an extraordinary blend of orchestral music, acting, and writing is what provides the splendid opera experience.
The only disappointing aspect of La Traviata was that i felt the soprano wasn't spectacular. I don't know much about opera but what made me fall in love with opera is the soprano's commanding presence and her ability to captivate her audience and I didn't think she did that. She wasn't a diva, and frequently let the tenor outshine her.
A diva is a celebrated female singer. It describes a rare outstanding female singer in opera. The true diva of opera is obviously Maria Callas. She is absolutely fantastic. There are few in the same league as Maria Callas.
However, one modern-day singer that is truly enthralling is Diana Damrau. I think a fantastic soprano really enhances one's appreciation for opera.
Overall, going to the opera was the highlight of my semester. It was great being able to go and experience it, the tickets must have been really expensive and it's awesome that we were able to go! I don't know what everyone else feels about opera, but I believe overall everyone enjoyed it! Opera may seem weird, but I believe once you see it live and experience it, it can have a tremendous impact on your life if you want it to.
