I find music to be the most appealing art; everytime I'm taking the train to school, I'll always have my earphones plugged in. It's become an addiction, really. I find myself capable of accomplishing more while listening to music, though for some it would be rather distracting.
However, every song I listen to (that includes foreign songs), I always try to comprehend the lyrics. The class had a discussion about the specific meanings behind art, yet I believe that it's up to the individual to decide. What we perceive from listening to songs is what really matters; it's the reason why we actually listen to music sometimes, to compare our own personal situations with what is being sung.
We tend to listen to sad songs when we're feeling a bit depressed, joyful ones when we're excited about an event. Overall, the importance of music in life can be seen easily. Attempting to find the significance of the lyrics and personalizing their meanings help us better understand it for ourselves. Whether or not the singer intended on putting a meaning in the song, for example (Coldplay - Yellow), we intend to convey meanings behind the lyrics. It seems that by understanding the lyrics and listening to certain songs changes our moods. Music, as a result is very powerful.
