HELLO CLASS!

This WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, we will meet in ROOM 424W at usual class time 2:10PM.

AT 3PM WE WILL GO OVER TO 404N TO JOIN THE OTHER CLASSES TO HEAR STEVE GRAFF, renowned pianist and Hunter Faculty member.

The following day, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5 AT 7PM, STEVE GRAFF will give a CONCERT at the Lang Recital Hall at Hunter North, 4th floor.

THIS CONCERT IS PART OF THE CURRICULUM AND YOU ARE ALL REQUIRED TO ATTEND IT.

Below, I post a short version of Steve Graff’s bio. We are lucky indeed to have him on the Hunter Faculty. For more information about him, log onto

www.StevenLGraff.com .

Steven Graff, pianist

Since his concerto debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, with whom he has appeared nine times, the American pianist Steven Graff has been the recipient of numerous distinguished awards and glowing critical praise. Mr. Graff was born in Chicago where he began his musical training. A string of scholarships led to studies at The Juilliard School where he received Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees as a Petschek scholarship awardee, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from The Graduate School of CUNY.

Steven Graff is at home on stage, over the airwaves and in the classroom. His appearances on the Nickelodeon Channel and the QE2 enlightened audiences with his interpretive performances, and recent tours of Norway, Japan, Italy, Israel and in cities across the U.S. have thrilled music-lovers everywhere.

A sought-after recitalist and chamber musician, Graff has performed at Weill, Zankel and Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, Lang Recital Hall and the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, Merkin and Alice Tully Halls in New York City and his performances have been broadcast on New York radio stations WQXR and WNCN, and Chicago’s WFMT.

A champion of new music, Graff has premiered and recorded contemporary works, most recently on the Capstone label. Having studied with Adele Marcus, Beveridge Webster and Herbert Stessin, and performed in master classes for Leon Fleischer, Menahem Pressler and Misha Dichter, Graff often leads his own master classes at colleges and universities. This past summer he was re-engaged as a featured teacher and performer in Hawaii’s Aloha International Piano Festival where he gave master classes and was presented in a solo recital, as well as appearing in a multi-day Festival in Salt Lake City, sponsored by the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation, where he was heard in recital.

Steven Graff currently serves on the piano faculty at New York’s Hunter College and is Head of The Piano Department at The Diller-Quaile School of Music in Manhattan.

Hello Class!

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow afternoon!

Two reminders and a note:

  • Those (eleven) of you who have not yet turned in your questionnaires, please remember  to bring them tomorrow!
  • The nine of you (Jose, Hannah, Tamara, Teresa, Polina, Kunwal, Maria, Richard and Shadi) who volunteered to bring objects for the museum class tomorrow — please don’t forget to bring them! The success of the class depends on them! Come prepared to say, in 1-2 minutes,               1) what is it? 2) what is it made of?  and 3) why do you care about it?
  • See you at 2:10pm in room 424W. As during our last class at Hunter, we will move  to Professor Graff’s room (404N) for the last hour, from 3:30 to 4:40PM.

Hello Class!

I loved meeting you all and hope you had a lovely Labor Day weekend! Here’s a  few announcements and reminders:

  • Next Wednesday, September 9, we will meet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 2:30PM at the round information desk just inside the grand lobby. Bring your museum card!
  • CHANGE! The 500 word essay on West Side Story will be due on Monday, September 14 instead of when it says in the syllabus I gave you. PLease DO post it by that day because we should all have the benefit of your thoughts by the 16th, when we will discuss West Side Story during the first part of the Class.
  • There is a free outdoors OPERA HD festival in the Plaza at Lincoln Center at 8PM through tomorrow. Check out the  schedule online and, if you like the opera, and it’s good weather, consider it!
  • On Tuesday, September 22nd, we have class tickets for the Fall for Dance festival at City Center. One of the pieces that will be performed that night is The Afternoon of a Faun, choreographed by the great Nijinsky for the Ballet Russes, the company that arguably brought ballet into the twentieth century. In order to understand the context of the piece and learn first hand (through drawings, paintings, costumes, videos and a lot of great archival material) a lot about the company, PLEASE do go see the exhibition Diaghilev’s Theater of Marvels at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Amsterdam Avenue between 65 and 66th street BEFORE SEPTEMBER 12TH! It will greatly multiply your enjoyment of the  ballet performance. I hope you were also able to see the other beautiful exhibition at MoMA about theater design, Drawing for Performance which closes tomorrow, September 7th.
  • If anyone cannot make the performance on 9/22 for a serious reason, I have some possible ticket swaps to offer when I see you!
  • See you Wednesday at 2:30!

Susana Leval
