1. If you made your video in the older version of iMovie (06) we downloaded together in class, skip to step #4. If you did not, please download this for free at http://support.apple.com/downloads/iMovie_HD_6

2. Open iMovie06 and drag your movie file into the Clips board

3. Save your new movie file.

4. Select Share as “CD-ROM” Share>Quicktime from the toolbar, then choose Compress Movie For>Web Streaming.

5. Go to blog to write post > Choose “add media” in bar above text box (same as for podcasts) > Locate your newly saved movie file in Movies folder on hard drive > Select your file > Selecct “insert into post” > Save and Publish

1. Save podcast in Garageband to desktop by choosing “Share”, “Export Podcast to Disc”, and leave selected items as they are

2. Go to “Write Post” in the Eportfolio

2. Click on “Add media” above post box

3. Click on the second icon (looks like a sun), “add media”

4. Upload your file (it should be an .m4a if you saved it this way, but it doesn’t have to be)

5. Add text to your post if you like

6. Publish post – your podcast will show up as a link, and when you click the link the podcast will open and play.

Once the melancholy passes we need to get back on line here. You need to post your blurbs, and your reviews if they went missing. I have saved copies of your comments on posts that I have made, and perhaps you have copies of others’ comments on your posts. So I think we can put back a lot of what disappeared. So, here’s what you need to do:

1. Make sure that your last review (review 2) is posted here, and if it isn’t post it again;
2. Post your latest blurb (don’t neglect to select the ‘Blurbs’ category when posting)
3. Leave your comments on the NYTimes Arts post
4. Leave your comments on the “The Way Things Go” post
5. If you have copies of others’ comments on your posts from anytime since October 18, please send them to me via email.
6. From now on, keep backup copies of your own comments and posts on your own computer, in the event that this mess happens again – no one has guaranteed that it won’t.

And please send me as many more as you like – lhorridge@gmail.com.

We need some more pictures for the blog header, don’t you think? How about some of your photos of various arts-related events you’re attending? Ideally your photos should be cropped to 865 pixels wide by 180 pixels tall. If you can’t do that yourself you can ask Lynn to do it for you. Send Lynn your photos at lhorridge@gmail.com.

If you are using a digital camera, make sure your settings are optimized for web viewing – check your manual if you’re not sure how to do this.

You can also use the free photo-editing software, Gimp, in your applications.

Here is how I scaled down one of the photos – changing it from 516K to 40K with little loss of detail:

1. Open Gimp application

2. Click File>Open> and find file on your computer

3. A new window will open -  click File>Image>ScaleImage>make Width smaller (in this case, 600pixels) and Height will auto-adjust after you click Scale

This may be enough to reduce the size. If not, you can also adjust the “quality”:

4. Save As>Save

5. Another panel will open – select “show preview in image” to see file size

6. Adjust “quality” with slidebar to balance size with quality (you can see effect on photo in window behind)

7. Try to get the file size to below 100K. If below 100K looks bad, it’s okay to go over, but the smaller the file size the better

Recommended guidelines = under 100K; 600 x 400 pixels;  72dpi

Don’t forget to keep a folder of all originals so that when you are playing around with new versions of files you always have an original to go back to!

1. click the ‘Log In’ link that you see in the left-hand column in the ‘Meta’ area
2. enter your username and password
3. when you’re logged in you’ll be taken automatically to the blog’s “dashboard”, where you’ll see a button to ‘Write a New Post” – click that button

4. give your post a title in the ‘title’ area

5. enter the content of your post in the ‘post area’ – use the basic formatting buttons if you want to format your text – if you know HTML, you can use it if you click the ‘HTML’ button – if you want to add a photo or other media, click the gray star next to ‘Add media’
6. click ‘Preview this Post’ to see what your post will look like, then make changes if necessary
7. when you’re happy with your post click ‘Publish’ to put it on the blog – or, if you’re not ready to publish yet, click ‘Save’ and your post will be saved as a draft but not published. 

If you can’t log in, you need to contact Lynn ASAP.
