Marina Nebro: Arts and Culture was started in August of 2012. Macaulay Honors College affords its students the opportunity to participate in the ePortfolio program, a way to create a positive digital footprint in the 21st century.
Marina Nebro: Arts and Culture was started in August of 2012. Macaulay Honors College affords its students the opportunity to participate in the ePortfolio program, a way to create a positive digital footprint in the 21st century. Very often, especially in todays day and age, individuals post inappropriate photographs and representations of themselves on the internet. This is a student blog looking to create a positive impression on college life. Frequently, when one thinks about college, the contrasting images of partying and all night studying come to mind. MN:AC is an effort to counteract these impressions, and show that there is so much more to the college student and the college experience– the arts! Throughout this blog, you will see posts about music concerts, theatrical performances, museum visits, personal artwork, lectures, and more.

The first “issue” of the Messenger was published in April 2011, after I approached Drew, Dr. Ugoretz, and Lisa Brundage about starting an online newspaper for all of Macaulay.
The first “issue” of the Messenger was published in April 2011, after I approached Drew, Dr. Ugoretz, and Lisa Brundage about starting an online newspaper for all of Macaulay. It’s been difficult — getting people to write, coordinating the editing process, advertising (some people still don’t know we exist!), featuring content that actually interests our students, and much more. Still, with the support and effort from my section editors and writers, we lasted a year. Then, we received 2nd place in NCHC 2012’s Best Student E-Newsletter contest. Now, we’re turning two (and yes, we finally have a logo!)! I hope to see next year’s editors take the Messenger to new heights. I would also love to see more students reading the site and interacting with us, telling us what they love and what they hate, and how to improve throughout. The Macaulay Messenger has defined much of my MHC experience. It was a risky venture, but one I was encouraged to make my vision a reality — not many people get to say this. As graduation approaches, I’m very sad leave my role as Editor in Chief, as well as the Honors College; however, I’ve learned so much from my work on the website. Yes, it has made me a better writer, editor, and leader. More importantly, it has connected me to so many people in the Macaulay community, as I had hoped it would. Finally, it has taught me a lesson I was lucky to learn at a pivotal time in my life — surround yourself with people that support you and move forward. The Messenger means more to me than I ever envisioned. I hope it means something to others as well.

During my freshman year, this was the mandatory first Macaulay blog that I never touched. When I went to Spain for sophomore year travels, this became my study abroad blog. I came to love blogging so much that I decided to convert it into a NYC student blog, and that fluid change is its roadmap. I’d like to keep it even when I graduate next year and use it to record the ramblings, observations, and community pep-talks that pop into my head.

This site began in response to Lee Quinby’s “Apocalypse” course at Macaulay for Fall ’12.
This site began in response to Lee Quinby’s “Apocalypse” course at Macaulay for Fall ’12. We had to create a creative project that somehow involved the Apocalypse or interpreted it. I decided to create a world in the future, where a young woman creates video diaries in an attempt to save herself from uprising violence – it was a way to interact with the issues of violence and Apocalyptic thought, and act and write (as well as learn an Oklahoma accent). I wrote, acted in, and shot, three short video entries you see under “Video Diaries” that culminate in a “video diary series,” from the perspective of the character “S.” I also did make-up, and created the image you see of Oklahoma and the history, under “Current Events and Geography.” I am potentially interested in furthering the story that “S” begins in Babylon, Oklahoma.

“Diary of a Young Playwright” is an attempt to chronicle my personal and professional experiences, thoughts and insights, and share great information going around the theatre world. It is geared towards those with a natural interest in theatre, but is not at all exclusive to less jargon-familiar readers. My first post ever featured this summary: “I am going to focus on my experience as a –budding– playwright in NYC. This means any theatre I see, internships I have, theatre work I do –y’know, theatre-stuff! From time-to-time, this blog will cover events I attend, and more mundane things like my summer plans or college experience. I’ll try to keep things timely and interesting. If there are specific theatre-related topics you, as a reader, are interested in, please let me know!” I post theatre reviews that I write, which is my journalism focus, and I also write about my own process. Furthermore, I am interested in (and have started) introducing “series” topics where I will explore one topic over a series of posts: a long time ago, I did my first one or two posts about “Theatre and Access,” which is something I am very passionate about. I examined the roles of Shakespeare in the Park as a “public” way for family theatre, what I call “white people theatre,” and etc. I like to explore multiple ways of looking at issues in theatre, especially socially, so that they may be interesting and useful to the outside observer. Above all, I like to try to talk about these things because it ultimately leads back to the oft-forgotten idea that theatre, like all art, can reinforce and reflect on society and is essential to its betterment (in my opinion). Future plans include: videos, a series I am starting where I chronicle my experience self-producing my own work (which you can see the first post of now) and perhaps some more writing about the actual process. I’d also like to try to write a few more personal articles. And, hopefully, get a few more regular readers who can suggest things for me to write about!

Ever since first creating The Utopia of Daniel, I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve spent updating, tweaking and polishing it up.
Ever since first creating The Utopia of Daniel, I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve spent updating, tweaking and polishing it up. From blogging about video games and tech productivity tips to college courses and local/national news, I like to talk about a wide variety of things. At last year’s Eportfolio Expo, my blog was categorized as Personal, but since then I have expanded and redefined what’s uploaded to it and shared on it. I plan to continue to make it more and more General Interest than anything else, and hope that my Macaulay friends and family continue to learn, watch, read and laugh with me! Especially after all of the terrible things that have been going on this past year, being close to my Macaulay family and getting people to laugh for a little while whenever I have the chance are things that I find very important. I’m looking forward to the Expo, and thank everyone involved with the technical side of the night in advance! =)

Currently, I am still fine-tuning the look and carefully selecting content to add. The name of the portfolio, “xsignature,” is derived from my name. X, or “chi,” is often used as an abbreviation for “Christ” and “signature” is an anagram for my last name. It reminds me of when you’re asked to “sign by the x” on important documents.

The purpose is to create an exciting blog based on anything related to art and design. I put up some of my poster designs for my school organizations like Phi Eta Sigma & Sigma Alpha Delta Honor Societies. I love to write as well, so I have explored creative non fiction by writing about unusual events that you normally don’t hear about – like live show tapings, video festivals, competitions. I also post ideas that I have about life, technology, art, people, and school. This is my true passion and I always try to direct people to my site! My future plans are to make illustrator tutorials on how to achieve certain effects on illustrator. By doing this, I hope that my peers can take away something useful and artistic, and maybe even become inspired to make their own designs using this program.
