I believe that dance is a form of language. I understand the definition of language as any form of communication that conveys an idea or expression. The clip Dante Adela showed us during our meeting last week was interpreted in different ways by everyone present. This shows me that there was a message that the dancers were trying to send to the audience. Interpretive dance is not the only form of dance that conveys messages. Dancers at nightclubs around New York City sometimes communicate desire for sexual intercourse through their movements. Dances such as the waltz communicate social status to others. One with knowledge of ballroom dances may be thought to possess high class. I believe that dance is one of the best forms of communication through body language. I sometimes think of dance as a form of mime. Mimes do not use any form of verbal communication, but still convey there feelings, ideas, or expressions through body language. Interpretive dancers communicate in the same way intentionally by moving to music in certain ways. I don’t think that dancers in every form of dance know that they are conveying a specific idea, but I still believe they are even if it is unintentional. The simple fact that someone is dancing to a beat shows me that this person likes the music he or she is listening to. The message can be complex and deeply meaningful or simple, but there is always a message through body language coming from dancers.
Is Dance a Language?
