The Oasis is a Middle Eastern restaurant located right outside of the Bedford Avenue L subway station. The restaurant has been serving the residents of Williamsburg for approximately nine years. It offers a wide range of Palestinian and other Middle Eastern cuisines from stuffed grape leaves to baba ghanouj to baklava. The food is made fast and given its location next to the subway, we noticed that most of the customers take their food to go.

The owner’s family moved to the United States in 1979 and later opened up a restaurant in Williamsburg because it is a quiet neighborhood. According to him there is not much crime and the people are friendly. Moreover, the owner of the restaurant also gave us an insight into the cultural and demographic changes in the Bedford Avenue section of Williamsburg. Over the past five years he said he noticed an influx of Asian and French speaking people coming to the neighborhood.

When asked about who the restaurant caters to, the owner says that he caters to everyone; however we noticed that most of the customers were working class Americans with families. The food is relatively cheap compared to the other restaurants in Williamsburg. At the local organic restaurants, a meal can be anywhere from $12 to $14, but at the Oasis it is possible to satisfy your palate on a modest budget of $5.
