Nancy Black - 4/21/05

1. How would you describe yourself regarding your age, ethnicity, education, employment, and family status?

I am 63 years of age, white, a college professor of English, married, a mother of two adult children (30 and 36 years of age), and one grandchild. I receive a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1971.

2. When and why did you move into the neighborhood?

I moved here after a friend who lives here invited us to visit her house and encouraged us to look for a house in the area. The houses were affordable, and I wanted to
live in an integrated neighborhood.

3. Please tell me what you feel are the best and worst things about the area?

The best is the feeling of community, the care of neighbors for one another. The worst is the lack of good stores, restaurants, etc. in the neighborhood.

4. What do you think the future of the neighborhood will be, and why?

If the housing prices continue to rise, maybe one day there will be better stores on Flatbush Avenue. Even if they fall, we will continue to be a community of people who care for one another (largely through block associations), and the housing will remain desireable.
