History of Victorian Flatbush

From the 1880’s to the 1920’s, areas of Flatbush were transformed
from rural farmlands to fashionable suburbs. This area is currently
known as Victorian Flatbush and has oneof the nation's largest
concentrations of Victorian homes. Many of the original houses still
stand, surviving shifts in the residents and the popularity of the neighborhood.
After World War II, real estate buyers forged a resurging interest in
Victorian homes. The brownstone movement of the 1960’s influenced
many people to restore older houses all over Brooklyn. Population
changes in the 1980’s diversified the neighborhood. Large groups of
Caribbean, Asian and Latino immigrants moved in and brought with
them a more varied cultural environment.
