There’s no doubt that reproductive technologies can transform lives for the better. Infertile couples and single, lesbian, gay, intersex, and transgender people have the potential to form families in ways that would have been inconceivable years ago. And yet some reproductive possibilities appall critics. In this Master Class, we will focus on one such case: carrying a pregnancy and delivering a baby in one’s post-menopausal years. Men have always been able to father children as they get older, but reproductive technology has extended women’s childbearing years into their 70s! We will explore the ethics of these developments, particularly why many people feel such unease about facilitating certain pregnancies. We will also discuss some of the ethical dilemmas raised by egg donation, sperm donation, egg-freezing, and surrogacy. One Hour Zoom class for up to 10 people.
Prof. Elizabeth Reis teaches courses on Medical Ethics, Reproductive Technologies, The Politics of Women’s Health, and Transgender Issues.
