Instructor: Darren Staloff
Offered by Macaulay Honors College
Fridays, 9:00am-12:00pm
MHC 351

Offered in the spring as part of the Hertog Scholars Program, this course is a continuation of MHC350. Beginning with English and French drama and then proceeding to an immersion in the eighteenth-century enlightened novel. This new venue provided a platform for social criticism and commentary on the problems of progress, optimism, and the proper relation of reason and emotion, as well as a fresh imagining of the psychological life journey of “atomized” individuals.

Sample reading list:

  • Cervantes, Don Quixote
  • Shakespeare, Hamlet
  • Moliere, The Misanthrope and Tartuffe
  • Defoe, Moll Flanders
  • Voltaire, Candide
  • Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther
  • Shelly, Frankenstein
  • Austen, Sense and Sensibility
  • Dickens, Hard Times
  • Turgenev, Fathers and Sons
  • Tagore, Home and the World

Students in the Hertog Scholars Program take six required multidisciplinary seminars focused on close readings and discussion of enduring texts that ask vital contemporary questions. The program is open to incoming first and second year Macaulay students.
