Pirates in fact: we will study the emergence of actual pirates, particularly those who were active in the Caribbean in early colonial centuries. But our primary focus is how and why the figure of the pirate became a staple of cultural representation.

Pirates in fiction: We will read some classic pirate stories, watch pirate movies, listen to operas, and analyze paintings depicting these fictional characters. We will examine and explain the captivating quality of the venturesome pirate life – from their utopian justifications (The Brothers of the Coast), to their transgressive practices of violence and rape.
