Join us for the opening celebration of “Artists’ Books and Other Collaborations: Carmen Boullosa and Magali Lara (Mexico City, 1979–1989),” an exhibition featuring the outstanding collaborative work of two of Mexico’s most groundbreaking cultural figures. The event will feature talks by Madeline Murphy Turner, Ph.D. Candidate, The Institute of Fine Arts, and Sunyoung Kim, Ph.D. Candidate, Purdue University, as well as a roundtable discussion with Carmen Boullosa and Magali Lara.

Carmen Boullosa is a Mexican poet, playwright, essayist, and novelist. More than a dozen books and over ninety dissertations have studied her work. She has taught at City College CUNY, Columbia, NYU, Georgetown, and others. A Guggenheim and a Cullman Center Fellow, she has received the Anna Seghers, LiBeratur, and Café Gijón awards and five NY-EMMYs, among other prizes. Recently, the NYPL acquired her papers and artist books. She is a Distinguished Lecturer at Macaulay Honors College.

Magali Lara is a visual artist, cultural agent, and teacher, who since the seventies has worked with art related to the body and emotions in the form of visual essays through themes such as identity, the feminine, otherness, and the connection between inside and outside. With more than forty years as an artist and twenty as a teacher, she has had numerous solo exhibition in national and international museums, and her work forms part of many renowned collections. She studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas and currently teaches in the Facultad de Artes de la Universidad Autónoma de Morelos.

Sunyoung Kim is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Spanish and Portuguese program at Purdue University, where she is writing her dissertation on Carmen Boullosa’s novels. Her research centers upon conceptualizations of race, gender, postcolonial, and transnational identity in contemporary Latin American and U.S Latino/a literature.

Madeline Murphy Turner is a Ph.D. Candidate at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, where she focuses on modern and contemporary art from Latin America. Her dissertation examines women’s collective artist books, galleries, and theater in Mexico. In addition to her curatorial endeavors, Madeline has taught courses in NYU’s Department of Art History and Steinhardt Department of Art and Art Professions. She has published articles in the Brooklyn Rail, Damn Magazine, Hyperallergic, and Art Margins, and has a forthcoming article in AWARE Magazine.
