Panel Discussion: What graduate schools are really looking for

To kickstart our Health Science Resource Fair, we will have a panel discussion featuring guest speakers from Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Touro College of Dental Medicine, and Icahn School of Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai, who will help students explore the possibility of attending graduate school and gain insight on the admissions process and timeline at their institution. This session will also prepare students to meet with representatives at the fair that day.

Margarita Diaz
Associate Director of Admissions – Touro College of Dental Medicine

Margarita Diaz is the Admissions Coordinator for Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM). Where she coordinates all aspects of the interviewing process. She has extensive experience in undergraduate and graduate admissions. Prior to the dental school, Margarita served as the Associate Director of the New York School of Career & Applied Studies, a Touro College undergraduate program. Margarita holds an MPA from New York University and a BA from Lehman College (CUNY).

 Dr. Gerard J. Marciano, Ed.D., PA-C

Assistant Professor of Physician Assistant Studies in Surgery (Education)

Dr. Gerard J. Marciano currently is a Co-Chair/Program Director of the Weill Cornell Medicine Graduate School of Medical Sciences Master of Science in Health Sciences for Physician Assistants Program. While helping at Weill Cornell Medicine Graduate School of Medical Sciences MSHS Physician Assistant Program, Dr. Marciano is an Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine of Physician Assistant Studies in Surgery (Education). He has taught at Weill Cornell Medicine for almost two decades. He completed his Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration in 2013 at Fordham University – Graduate School of Education. Proceeding his doctorate, he began his higher education career at Long Island University studying Pharmacotherapeutics. He is very excited to meet students interested in a health focused career and provide tips to be successful in this field.

Elizabeth Francese
Assistant Director of Admissions and Recruitment – Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health

In her role, Elizabeth researches key markets for prospective students and establishes a strategic plan to target and engage prospective students. Throughout the recruitment cycle, she also hosts conversations with students to discuss their academic options and provides assistance throughout the application process. Serving as a liaison between prospective students and their chosen academic program, Elizabeth assists students by arranging faculty meetings, and campus tours. Elizabeth received her BA in English from Montclair State University in 2011 and she joined Columbia in 2017.

Dr. Matthew O’Connell, Ph.D.
Senior Associate Dean for Curriculum, Recruitment and Admissions – Icahn School of Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Mount Sinai
Professor of Oncological Sciences

Matthew O’Connell is the Senior Associate Dean for Curriculum, Recruitment and Admissions at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is also a Cancer Biologist and Professor in the Department of Oncological Sciences, and has an active research program into the control of genome stability in normal and tumor cells. He joined Mount Sinai 16 years ago, and before that was the Assistant Director of Research and Director of Cell Biology at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center (Melbourne, Australia). He received his PhD in Genetics from the University of Adelaide (Australia), and performed his Postdoctoral Training with N. Ronald Morris at Rutgers Medical School (NJ), and with Nobel Laureate Sir Paul Nurse at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (London, UK).
