Creative Project: Fundamentalist Christian Response to Biological Threat

For my creative project I created a video response to a fictional biological attack. The video is created for fundamentalist Christians (most likely similar to those who appeared in Jesus Camp). At first I tried creating an animation, but due to the time it takes to make even a short animation I decided to do something different. I was influenced by Stroziers analysis of the seven seals of fundamentalism, and I tried to incorporate these traits into my video. Since a fundamentalist Christian leader is meant to evoke passion in their followers, I tried to make the video as emotionally intense as I could. I chose to make the video in a trailer format, using the song Lux Aeterna by Clint Mansell. This song is an overused song in trailers, and I felt it was appropriate due to the religious undertones the song has.

I found most of the material for my video online after searching Youtube and Vimeo for hours on end. Once I found all of my clips, I made an outline of the video and started to construct everything in an organized matter. I wanted to cover five main ideas: the origins of the virus, how scientists were at fault, why nonbelievers should be concerned, why believers shouldn’t worry, and how Jesus would save His followers. This layout would make the video easy to understand for the viewer.

In my research paper I discussed how many fundamentalist Christians believe biological experimentation is immoral, and I wanted to express this in my project. There aren’t many facts in the trailer, and it instead focuses on pinpointing the fears often associated with the apocalypse. I used real images of plagues and diseases of the past, clips of cities being destroyed, and images of the devil to stir horror and panic in the viewers mind. After establishing that nonbelievers were doomed to eternal suffering for their actions, I wanted to create excitement for the target audience. I used clips of space, Heaven, and Jesus to paint a picture of the happiness to come for all those who follow Christ. The video clearly states that nonbelievers should suffer which supports how fundamentalists often turn to violence to protect their ideals. The images, the music, and the words on the screen are all carefully matched up to force the viewer to associate certain imagery with specific ideas.
