Skint: Get a night out for free (or almost free)

Want to see what New York City has in store without hurting your wallet? No problem! The Skint is a blog that tells us about all the various inexpensive events that are taking place right in New York City.

Many seem to think that a good time or even a night out in the city means that one has to spend a lot of cash but Skint proves otherwise.  The Skint was created by two underemployed friends that used tell each other about bargains and free events that they’d hear about and then decided to post all the cool bargains they heard about and share them with everyone. The word skint, itself, actually means lacking in fund, which is why the objective of The Skint, as stated on the blog is “ [to] prove you don’t need to be rich to enjoy the best of the city.”

The Skint supplies a variety of events to attend daily. As they literally list the different events that they know, they cover a broad spectrum of the arts. Music, art, theater, culinary arts, and the literary arts, are all included in their posts. Even when it comes to a specific part of the arts, they make suggestions to events that suit different minds, styles and tastes. For example their options for musical events have a broad range, ranging from operas at the Metropolitan Museum and Carnegie hall to marching bands that are bringing their sounds to band shells around New York City.

Theme specific events, like a Halloween event guide, and group discount opportunities are posted not only for subscribers but for everyone to see.

Even though the public can’t make comments or post on the blog whenever they feel like it, there is an option to make a request for a sponsored post or an ad on the site and email tips or remarks to the creators. Comments and public replies are not needed to know that this blog gets a lot of buzz. By looking at the “what people say about us “ link on the blog we see that its been getting recognition by The New York Times, New York Magazine, 1010 wins, and refinery 29.

The layout is both simple and user-friendly using a simple font and listing upcoming events in the center. The infancy look and simple atmosphere that is set in the blog, I think, is parallel to its purpose: that a lot can be gained even when you have so little.

The Skint brings so much of New York’s rich culture for so little. By catering to everyone’s taste and fancy, I don’t think there is one person that cannot benefit from this blog!
