How do I find Manhattan museums and galleries for cheap?

Going to see an art exhibit or show doesn’t have to be expensive. The arts calendar can point you to some great upcoming free and cheap events in each of the boroughs, and there are other websites that give information on New York City arts, particularly in Manhattan.

Here are a few Manhattan locations that won’t bore a hole in your pocket to keep in mind the next time you crave some art:

  •  New Museum of Contemporary Art: Enjoy a curated collection spotlighting both local artists and world-famous pieces. Pieces range from visual art to performances, and there are also events such as holiday parties at the museum. Chris Burden’s piece “Extreme Measures” is now on view (through 1/12/14) and an ongoing project “Performance Archives Performance” features many different artists.
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art: This world-renowned museum is free to many students, requesting a donation of just $12. Coming to the Met in November, we can look forward to “Jewels By JAR”, an exhibition of famous designer jewelry. Tickets purchased for the Met also include the Cloisters which is home to stunning medieval works of art, notably the tapestries.
  • High Line Park: The High Line Park is a true gem of Manhattan: beautiful gardens and artwork are displayed on old train tracks above the city. High Line events are often free and range from art tours and exhibits to Tuesday night stargazing. Artists whose work is displayed on the High Line include Carol Bove and Roman Signer.
  • Museum of Modern Art: The MoMA is yet another cultural staple of New York, and is again very reasonably priced for students ($14, free for Macaulay students). There are many wonderful displays at the moment, including “Soundings: A Contemporary Score” and “Magritte; The Mystery of the Ordinary”.
  • Art in General Gallery:One of the best galleries in New York, with a wide depth of material from upcoming artists, Art in General is free for all.
  • Storefront for Art and Architecture: This nonprofit provides a canvas for contemporary art and architecture pieces, and aims to spotlight local artists in the exhibitions.
