The conglomerate of Steinway, Ditmars, Ravenswood, and Hallet’s point are are part of Greater Astoria, but the village Stephen Halsey established in the 1839 was the first to bear the name. Today some of its most notable architectural antiques include:
EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER AND CHAPEL. Built in 1868 and consecrated in 1879 the church is surviving Gothic Revival building. The of ashlar stone church rests on Crescent St. and 30th Road with a dramatic bell tower.
HANAC (74th Precinct, Police Department). a 1890 Romanesque Revival gem. Located on 30th Ave, between 23rd Street and Crescent Street.
GOOD SHEPHERD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH. This Gothic Revival granite ashlar stone church was initially called The First Methodist Church of Astoria. Today it still displays its bell tower and the crenellations on top of it.
OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. This 1915 structure is a Neo-Gothic Revival church that stands tall on 23-35 Newton Ave with its limestone very close to its sister building, the Mt.Carmel Institute.
