Heinrich Engelhard Steinway, a German immigrant, founded Steinway and Sons on March 5, 1853. The corporation, which is still present today, focuses on the manufacturing and distribution of high class pianos, ranging from grand pianos to upright pianos. Although the company started out very small, it grew rapidly and led to the opening of a factory in Astoria, New York. Along with the factory came a “company town” in which workers were cared for. In fact, walking down Steinway Street is a direct credit to Mr. Steinway’s success. The factory is still operating today in the same location, right here in Astoria. Some new developments for the factory include an alterate energy source in powering manufacturing by installing solar panels. Although the factory has historical roots, it keeps up with the changes of the society around it.
