Art: Traditional and Contemporary

It is very difficult to describe what exactly is Caribbean art. All the art that falls under such a category cannot simply be described in a few sentences. Similar to how Caribbean culture takes bits and pieces from other cultures around the world, with the roots of some inspiration coming from colonialism, art works in a similar fashion. Caribbean art can have many different elements and styles.

Despite, how each country has slight differences in traditions and artistic style, there are still some themes that can be seen throughout Caribbean artwork, in traditional as well as contemporary art. Some common themes seen in Caribbean art include nature, self and cultural references such as vodou. The vivid colors typically associated with Caribbean art are inspired by the scenery in the Caribbean. The colors are normally seen in traditional older artworks and also inspiring more modern Caribbean art. This stereotypical idea of Caribbean Art was fueled by what the tourists and outside market wanted and as a result has created an image that Caribbean artists today still struggle to break free from.
