Mission

We will be exploring many of the Arts in New York from opera to graffiti: what it means to be an artist, how to deepen our response to the art we experience, and how to develop a sophisticated Arts vocabulary. We will be reading a novel, poems, and articles on different aspects of Art as well as specific information on different genres. There will be approximately 10 forays outside of class time: visits to museums, performances and the like both in New York City and also on campus. These will occur evenings and Friday/Saturday times. We will be focused on ‘making’ responses and showing our understanding in both informal and complex projects. Although you will be writing every week in class and on blog posts, this course will not focus on paper writing. This course is immersive and will move at a fast pace to accommodate the goals of the seminar.
