This summer, the Kenan Scholars traveled to Quito, Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands where they immersed themselves in the local community, lending a hand as they learned about the local culture, educational systems, and challenges dealt with in the region.
The Kenan Scholars conducted research to evaluate the impact of community leadership programs. These initiatives work with the local community to empower locals in developing their area of profession/service to improve incomes and opportunities. These include families that provide homestay accommodation, surfing instructors, fishing cooperatives and others. Students also worked with Manos Reciclando, a local women’s art group that works with recycled materials. They evaluated the role of this initiative in promoting sustainability on Isabela. 🇪🇨🌟
