Spring 2020 Enhanced Opportunities Funds

All eligible students will be considered for the general Opportunities Fund grant of $1,500.  Enhanced Opportunities Fund grants ($2,500 - $5,000) will be awarded competitively to students who meet special requirements. Students may receive either a general grant or enhanced grant, but not both. See below for available Enhanced Opportunities Funds. Lloyd Blankfein Opportunities Fund

Study Abroad
10 at $5,000

Lloyd Blankfein, Senior Chairman of Goldman Sachs, will provide students an enhanced opportunities fund grant of $5,000 for study abroad. All study abroad applicants will be considered.


Goldman Sachs Opportunities Fund

Study Abroad/Away | Internships | Research
1 at $5,000 

As part of Macaulay’s corporate partnership with Goldman Sachs, the company has agreed to fund Opportunities Funds for selected students. This award is separate from paid internship roles for which students may be hired. Being a Goldman Sachs intern is not a condition of the award.

A statement of justification must include how this experience will lead you to pursue innovation that will enhance the sustainability, knowledge, or lived experience of the world around you.


Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholars – Greece Opportunities Fund

Study Abroad – Greece
3 at $5,000

Funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholars Opportunities Fund will provide students with financial need, the opportunity to study abroad in Greece. Recipients are expected to write a brief reflection paper after their study abroad trip and meet with the foundation representatives.

A statement of justification must address the following question: Why is it meaningful that you have chosen this activity in Greece, and how will this funding enable you to overcome any financial challenges preventing you from participating?


Study Abroad Opportunities Fund – Israel

Study Abroad – Israel
3 at $5,000

Funded by an anonymous donor, this enhanced Opportunities Fund will provide students with the opportunity to study abroad in Israel. Recipients are expected to write a brief reflection paper after their study abroad trip.


Mellon Humanities Opportunities Fund

Study Abroad/Away | Internships | Research
5 at $4,000

The Mellon Humanities Opportunities Fund provides enhanced Opportunities Fund grants of $4,000 for support study abroad, an unpaid internship, or research in the humanities. Priority given to Bridge Scholars and other students from the Bronx, but all Macaulay students seeking support for a humanities-related experience are eligible to apply.


Schor Scholars Opportunities Fund

Study Abroad – For City or Queens College Students
10 at $3,000

Funded by the Estate of Joseph M. Schor, the Schor Scholars Opportunities Fund will provide a fixed travel grant for students from Macaulay Honors College at City College or Queens College. (The statement of justification does not require any specific content related to the Schor Scholars Opportunities Fund.) Recipients are expected to write a reflection paper based on their learning experience.


May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation Opportunities Fund

Study Abroad/Away | Internships | Research
10 at $2,500

Funded by the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, the Rudin Scholars Opportunities Fund will provide a stipend to students participating in an arts related internship or travel.

A statement of justification must address the following question: Why are the arts an important part of your development, and how is that reflected in this activity?


Special Opportunities Fund Programs

These prestigious fellowships and activities include financial support. They will count as a student’s use of the Opportunities Fund, though they will have a different application process.


Immigration & Veterans Legal Assistance – Duane Morris LLP

Internship
5 at $3,000

For students interested in pursuing careers in law, human rights, and social services, this is a remarkable opportunity to learn from and support the pro bono legal work of Duane Morris LLP on immigration, asylum, refugee, and veterans rights cases.

You must submit a one page cover letter and resume to be considered for this opportunity.


Augmented/Virtual Reality – NYU Tandon School of Engineering Internship

This is an exciting and fruitful opportunity to learn and become part of the future technology industries working with various start-up companies in NYC. The NYU Tandon School of Engineering in conjunction with NYC Media Lab and Macaulay Honors College New Media Lab have developed a pilot internship and jobs opportunity program for up to 10 Macaulay students this coming spring to be part of a new tech hub called RLab. The R stands for “reality” and the work is exclusively in augmented and virtual reality projects.

A statement of justification must include a statement of intent explaining your interest in these fields and the program. You must also submit your resume.

Goldsmith Fellows

The Goldsmith Scholars Program identifies and supports Macaulay students for whom graduate education is an essential component of their aspirations. These high-achieving students are then guided through the application process, with special emphasis on applying for national scholarships and fellowships to pursue graduate studies. LEARN MORE

Goldsmith Scholars receive guaranteed access (with a successful application) to an enhanced Opportunities Fund grant of $5,000, to support study abroad, an unpaid internship, or research. A reflection paper is required after your Goldsmith-funded experience. As a Goldsmith Scholar, you may be asked to meet with a representative from the Goldsmith Foundation. 


William R. Kenan Scholars Program

The William R. Kenan Scholars Program was founded to enhance honors education at CUNY by sponsoring a group of outstanding Macaulay students who have demonstrated an early commitment to service and civic engagement. The program offers unique experiences and opportunities with the aim of fostering each student’s individual gifts—as well as encouraging cooperative endeavors—and preparing them to make substantial contributions in their chosen fields after graduation. Funded by Miraldina and Anthony Meyer, the Meyer Scholars Opportunities Fund will provide a fixed travel stipend for study abroad. Meyer Scholars will also be expected to attend a group dinner with the donors (date to be determined).

A statement of justification must include a statement of intent outlining how their study abroad trip relates directly to their major and future professional aspirations.


Morin Engineering Opportunities Fund

The Morin Engineering Opportunities Fund will provide five scholarships for study abroad, an unpaid internship, or research in the STEM fields with preference given to engineering majors.

Service Trip to Puerto Rico

A year and a half after Hurricane Maria, much of Puerto Rico’s infrastructure remains devastated and in need of repair. This summer, 16 Macaulay Honors College students will have the opportunity to participate in our second service trip to the island, as we partner with the St. Bernard Project (SBP) to assist in home rebuilding, to directly benefit families in need. MORE


Macaulay at The Porter School of Environmental Studies – Tel Aviv, Israel

Macaulay Honors College and Tel Aviv University’s Porter School of Environmental Sciences is again offering a study abroad program during the summer 2019 session. Tailored just for Macaulay students, the program consists of one – four credit course focused on sustainability, combined with carefully planned living and learning opportunities, trips and cultural experiences. Funded by Adam Dayan, the Adam Dayan Opportunities Fund will provide a fixed stipend for a student majoring in Creative Writing or Spanish. Adam Dayan scholars are expected to attend a lunch where they meet with the donor (set up by Macaulay Honors College staff).

A statement of justification must include how the study of Creative Writing or Spanish has contributed to the student’s development.


Jason Cohen Opportunities Fund

Funded by Jason Cohen, the Jason Cohen Opportunities Fund will provide a fixed stipend for a student doing their study abroad in Israel.

A statement of justification must include a reflection on the professional, academic, and personal importance of studying in Israel.
