Most of the time I was admiring the work I was thinking "This is one twisted guy." Everything seemed to be out of a twisted parallel universe. There was so much in the exhibit, I couldn't help but wonder "How did he come up with so much stuff?" I noticed a lot of his imaginary creatures seemed to be combinations of various "alien" characteristics like antennas and many eyes. At the same time, they didn't seem to be random combinations.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/independent-event-2-moma#comments nyc who we are Mon, 07 Dec 2009 03:57:30 +0000 freddie 458 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 House of the Dead, Opera at the Lincoln Center http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/house-dead-opera-lincoln-center
My first reaction to the opera was "What language are they speaking?! Why isn't it Russian?!" I was actually looking forward to understanding what was being said at the performance. I suppose romance languages are pretty popular among theatre. And even if they are speaking English, there's always an accent, probably British. But I digress. As a lot of you guys said, the background was a depressing gray and was simple yet effective. It served the purpose to show the bleakness of the prison and how it's the polar opposite of luxury.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/house-dead-opera-lincoln-center#comments theater who we are Mon, 07 Dec 2009 03:14:18 +0000 freddie 457 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 MoMA http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/moma-1
I really enjoyed my visit to the MoMA. The Demoiselles exhibit was interesting because it really makes you pay attention to detail. The paintings looked like puzzles that you had to solve in your mind. I liked these 2 in particular:

Finding a woman in "Ma Jolie" was a tough task. The second one made me think of Mardi Gras.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/moma-1#comments nyc arts painting who we are Mon, 23 Nov 2009 03:58:13 +0000 freddie 395 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Mel Kendrick's "Markers" http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/mel-kendricks-markers
New York sculptor Mel Kendrick's 5 10 foot plus stone sculptors are in Madison Square Park, just a 2 minute walk from Baruch. I am pretty tired of saying this but.. I have no idea what to make of this. There are 5 big stone sculptors, alternating black and white, different, unconventional shapes, smack dab in the middle of Madison Square Park. After reading a bit about his style, all I can make of this is that he made a bunch of grooves and cuts, and cut out pieces to have a bunch of shapes.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/mel-kendricks-markers#comments nyc nyc arts sculpture Sun, 15 Nov 2009 23:53:30 +0000 freddie 351 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 BAM BAM BAM http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/bam-bam-bam
The performance we saw at BAM was one of the oddest shows I've ever seen. It was entertaining and interesting at some points, and mind-numbingly boring at others. Sometimes it was compelling, other times it was excruciatingly annoying. The most annoying part was definitely near the beginning when Marquise was moving in a circle and repeating the same few lines over and over and over and over... in French.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/bam-bam-bam#comments theater who we are Sun, 15 Nov 2009 23:24:22 +0000 freddie 349 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Derek Jeter is a G http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/derek-jeter-g

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/derek-jeter-g#comments nyc who we are Mon, 09 Nov 2009 05:09:11 +0000 freddie 325 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Old news but... Baruch is really big http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/old-news-baruch-really-big
I decided to explore Baruch and see what I would find. Since I'm usually clueless about the what's going on in my own school, I thought this may be beneficial. And simply put, I found myself with a lot of photo ops. Did you guys ever look down from the 13th floor of the Vertical Campus? I wanted to capture the height and depth of the location, but from the 13th floor all I could get was the site of 2 floors down. Eventually I got to the 8th floor and I think this is quite a site. It is a long way down. And looking around, you see what is goung on in Baruch at all times.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/old-news-baruch-really-big#comments baruch who we are Mon, 09 Nov 2009 04:55:42 +0000 freddie 324 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 China Festival Music Breakdown http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/china-festival-music-breakdown
The China Festival at Carnegie Hall was an enjoyable experience. Although I don't play any instruments and the music at the concert wasn't anything that I put on my mp3 player, I was paying close attention to the performers and the way they were playing. The first pianist was boring me a bit in the beginning because he started off slow and somber. Then, suddenly, he hit a very fast "Tom and Jerry" pace. I noticed that he had a look of intense concentration throughout.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/china-festival-music-breakdown#comments concert fred nyc nyc arts who we are Sun, 01 Nov 2009 23:56:49 +0000 freddie 286 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Reading By Joseph O'Connor http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/reading-joseph-oconnor-0
Everyone in attendance was enticed by renowned author Joseph's O'Connor humor, wit, charisma, confidence and undoubtedly, his accent. He sounded like an older Porfessor O'Malley. He was interesting and very entertaining to listen to. His stories about dreary Ireland reminded me of the autobiography "Angela's Ashes" by another renowned Irish author, late Frank McCourt. All his talk of Patty Smith gave everyone a good laugh. All of his readings were powerful and some very funny.
