Seeing as I had to be at the school by 9am , I expected some significant tasks to be presented. However, for the most part I found that the event was unorganized. To begin, there were no clear groups formed, instead it was up to the individual to make the group. Next, there was no clear leader who directed the students or really explained what was to be done. Everyone seemed to be going around with their own business.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/snapshot-galley-macaulay#comments maxilia who we are Sun, 13 Dec 2009 23:30:08 +0000 maxilia 475 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 American Museum of Natural History ( indepedent event 4) http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/american-museum-natural-history-indepedent-event-4
On saturday in the blistering cold, I decided to visit the American Musuem of Natural History. Though I basically froze on my way over there, it was definitely worth the trip, especially with the virtually free admission (donation). I first visited the area dedicated to astronomy and apart from reading just about the stars like the temperature of the Sun (6,000 F), I got to weight myself. Apparently my weight in some specific planets was less than a single pound, in fact it was .1 of a pound. So this was a litte fun deed to go about doing.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/american-museum-natural-history-indepedent-event-4#comments maxilia who we are Sun, 06 Dec 2009 23:23:19 +0000 maxilia 451 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 House of the Dead Opera http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/house-dead-opera
Firstly, I must say that this was my first experience at an opera and it was definitely not what I had expected. I guess I had imagined a stereotyped version of the opera in which a rather thick woman dominates the stage and sings until her lungs can give no more. Yet, this opera was different on various levels. To begin, the show was mostly composed of men. Next, the singing was actually not as loud as I thought it would be ( I imagined it might be a bit unbearably loud, I guess expect some superpower voice). Thirdly, the performance greatly resembled a theatrical showing.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/house-dead-opera#comments maxilia theater who we are Fri, 04 Dec 2009 18:27:55 +0000 maxilia 436 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 House of the Dead: First Impressions (1) http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/house-dead-first-impressions-1
As I was reading Memoirs from the House of the Dead, I could very much relate with one factor the narrator pointed out. This point was the idea that prison work was not so difficult nor it did it require a lot of man power. What made prison work so cruel and unbearable was the fact that it was obligatory and not complying meant punishment. I found that when the narrator realized this, I completely agreed with him.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/house-dead-first-impressions-1#comments maxilia who we are Sun, 29 Nov 2009 22:07:09 +0000 maxilia 414 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Markers: Madison Square Park http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/markers-madison-square-park
Many sculptors often have their work appraised because of the obvious talent that is required to depict a recognizable object. For instance, a sculpture of a naked human body is appreciated because of the exactness it portrays in size relations, forms, and angles and even perhaps the facial expression. However, Mel Kendrick's work exhibited in Madison Square park named "Markers" is unique in its abstract content. Viewers strain their eyes to recognize something, anything, a chair-like- shape or even a geometrical shape.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/markers-madison-square-park#comments maxilia sculpture Sun, 29 Nov 2009 21:41:35 +0000 maxilia 411 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Independent Visit 3: Bello's Big Apple Circus http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/independent-visit-3-bellos-big-apple-circus

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/independent-visit-3-bellos-big-apple-circus#comments maxilia Tue, 24 Nov 2009 03:23:30 +0000 maxilia 399 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 MOMA trip http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/moma-trip
My second trip to the MOMA today was more enlightening then the last since I realized the necessity of having background information. Previously I had passed by the Picasso painting of Ma Jolie while not believing it to be such a masterpiece. However, today when we stood before it and analyzed how it actually represented a woman playing a guitar, I appreciated the art more extensively. Professor Bergman revealed how Picasso had stripped the woman and guitar into dispersed fragments. Hence, to view the subject one had to piece together the parts through deep concentration.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/moma-trip#comments maxilia who we are Thu, 19 Nov 2009 03:23:56 +0000 maxilia 370 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Alexander String Quartet http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/alexander-string-quartet-0
The Alexander String Quartet performance was done by obvious skilled professionals. From the moment they began, I noticed that their melodies were so in sync and pleasant to the ear. I noticed some techniques in particular of these 4 musicians. In one instance, 3 of the musicians would play the same tunes while one drew more attention than the others by subtly playing different notes.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/alexander-string-quartet-0#comments baruch concert maxilia Wed, 18 Nov 2009 00:57:20 +0000 maxilia 363 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 MOMA- Independent Visit 2 http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/moma-independent-visit-2
This friday I visited the MOMA and stood in front of some amazing art pieces. What usually catches my eyes is the manipulation of color especially bright, vibrant ones. One piece by Gustav Klimt was especially attractive because of the intense greens that portrayed a green forest. The majority of the painting was composed of the leaves of these forrest trees, that were actually made of points. Without the bottom part of the painting that reveals thin tree trunks, it would not be clear that these points are actually leaves.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/moma-independent-visit-2#comments maxilia who we are Sat, 14 Nov 2009 19:15:02 +0000 maxilia 341 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09
