There were a couple of pieces that caught my eye before entering John Wood's exhibit. The pieces had a theme of evil vs. good, dark vs. light, red and black vs. white and naturally God vs. the devil. The photos were nicely color coordinated and strongly characterized between the sins of the world, represented with red and black colors, and the good of the world, represented by light beige and white colors.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/innovative-art-john-wood#comments ICP John Wood matthew who we are Mon, 21 Sep 2009 02:13:49 +0000 im.mattlaw 109 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 John Wood, The "Quiet Protest" http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood-quiet-protest
I didn't expect the photographs to be so raw and powerful. John Wood showed how a "quiet protest" could speak volumes louder than any other. Each of his photographs touches upon a variety of subjects including violence, tragedy of war, nature, and the environment and conveys a message. The first photograph we looked at of John Wood was that of the gun surrounded by daisies that were made to look like it could be splatters of blood. My eyes were immediately drawn to the gun because of its placement in the center. It had an air of gloominess.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood-quiet-protest#comments hannah lee John Wood Sun, 20 Sep 2009 15:11:14 +0000 hlee 105 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 John Wood http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood
John Wood's pictures were unlike anything I have ever seen. I wasn't in love with them but I understood them. And what's more is I respected him so much for holding himself back as he created his photographs. Let me explain: what I mean by that is John Wood had opinions and he definitely had a message. He was passionate about things. And being an artist, his art was an outlet for him and also a medium through which to spread his message. Knowing this and then seeing what he did through his photos made me really respect him for his restraint.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood#comments John Wood jolene who we are Sun, 20 Sep 2009 07:11:47 +0000 Jolene 103 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 International Center of Photography http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/international-center-photography-2
As I entered the International center of photography on Wednesday afternoon with some of my IDC classmates, I felt a bit out of the loop. As I roamed around the facility trying to find John Woods' exhibit on "Quiet Protest", I felt somewhat artistically uneducated. I looked and stared at many photographs on display, perplexed about what exactly the photographer was trying to convey. I thought to myself that maybe I didn't have the ability to appreciate photography like others did, until I caught a glimpse of certain Avadon fashion photography, which absolutely took my breath away.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/international-center-photography-2#comments John Wood laura Sun, 20 Sep 2009 07:06:51 +0000 Laura Abreu 102 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 International Center of Photography http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/international-center-photography-1
read more
http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/international-center-photography-1#comments John Wood laura who we are Sun, 20 Sep 2009 07:02:19 +0000 Laura Abreu 101 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 John Wood Exhibition http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood-exhibition
I was captivated by John Woods' art. The first thing I encountered upon entering the exhibit was a quote "maybe the time has come for creative photography to encompass the large problems without propaganda or journalism. I was intrigued by this, and wondered how that concept was going to become realized through his art.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood-exhibition#comments ICP John Wood Ross Fri, 18 Sep 2009 18:21:05 +0000 Ross Meneses 91 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 Decoding Photographic Intention http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/decoding-photographic-intention
I must admit, photography is an artistic medium that I never quite had the best understanding of. With painting or performance or music it's irrefutable that the effort that goes into these works requires a motive, an agenda to express a certain idea. But, by pressing a button to snap a picture, I didn't find it as straight-forward. To me, a picture in a gallery put side by side with a picture that had no artistic implication looked the same. Until I attended the John Wood exhibit at the International Center of Photography.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/decoding-photographic-intention#comments John Wood photography stephanie Fri, 18 Sep 2009 04:10:17 +0000 stephanie.lascano 86 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 John Wood Photography Exhibit http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood-photography-exhibit
The photography museum was a lot more interesting then I thought it would be. I think the exhibit was very unusual. The first photograph that we looked at really got me to see that a photgraph is worth a thousand words. When we first looked at it I was like ok its a photo of flowers with a gun in the middle. Whats the big deal with that? It was really cool that the photgraph was more then that. Once we started talking about the photograph I realized how reflective of the time period it was. The whole Vietnam era is one of my favorite times in American history.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood-photography-exhibit#comments ICP John Wood Thu, 17 Sep 2009 23:53:53 +0000 Michelle Ranello 84 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09 The John Wood Exhibit and my Thoughts on Photography as an Artistic Medium http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood-exhibit-and-my-thoughts-photography-artistic-medium

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09/content/john-wood-exhibit-and-my-thoughts-photography-artistic-medium#comments ICP John Wood who we are Thu, 17 Sep 2009 21:37:17 +0000 Alex Greetham 83 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/bergman09
