Arriving early to the International Center of Photography, I strolled by many works of art. There were a couple of pieces that caught my eye before entering John Wood's exhibit. The pieces had a theme of evil vs. good, dark vs. light, red and black vs. white and naturally God vs. the devil. The photos were nicely color coordinated and strongly characterized between the sins of the world, represented with red and black colors, and the good of the world, represented by light beige and white colors.

My first visit to the ICP was very interesting. I thought that it wouldn't be something that I would be interested in but was surprised. The discussions were thought-provoking and people's interpretations of the photos were impressive and interesting. I had fun analyzing the pictures myself. I may not be putting myself in the most intellectual light but I never thought analyzing photos could be fun but was pleasantly surprised. ICP is a place I would revisit to not only look at photos but examine and analyze them and try to understand the photographers.

Two Visions of Paris

Both class visits we have made, one to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the other to the International Center of Photography offered two unique versions of Paris. The MET exhibit cataloged the transformation of Paris under Emperor Napoleon III and his master planner Georges-Eugene Haussman in the mid 19th century that turned Paris into the City of Light. The ICP exhibit gave a shared vision of Paris, post World War II, and sought to remind the city of its former grandeur created by Haussman, and seen through the lens of Richard Avedon.

I was captivated by John Woods' art. The first thing I encountered upon entering the exhibit was a quote "maybe the time has come for creative photography to encompass the large problems without propaganda or journalism. I was intrigued by this, and wondered how that concept was going to become realized through his art.

So today our IDC class went to see the International Center of Photography at the perfect time, during Fashion week. There was an exhibition of Avedon Fashion from 1944-2000 and it was really amazing. The photographs captured the style of each era it was representing. I was looking at all the photographs and I really loved the series of Mike Nichols and Suzy Parker.

The photography museum was a lot more interesting then I thought it would be. I think the exhibit was very unusual. The first photograph that we looked at really got me to see that a photgraph is worth a thousand words. When we first looked at it I was like ok its a photo of flowers with a gun in the middle. Whats the big deal with that? It was really cool that the photgraph was more then that. Once we started talking about the photograph I realized how reflective of the time period it was. The whole Vietnam era is one of my favorite times in American history.
