In James Baldwin’s Notes of a Native Son, his section on the Harlem Ghetto focuses primarily on the influences and effects of black media and anti-Semitism amongst blacks. He touches on how the addition of parks and playgrounds made it seem that they were happy to outsiders but really it didn’t do much for them.

The article “Communities” by Joshua Zeitz focuses on something we talked about many times this semester, which are people of the same ethnicity living in areas heavily populated with their own kind. Even today this idea exists not only in living close to people of the same race but also their children growing up together.

After reading, “The good old days of poverty: Merchants and the battle over pushcart peddling on the lower east side” by Suzanne Wasserman and “Push-cart Lane” by Jefferson Machamer, I was reminded of the one, famous Halal food vendor that most people call “Chicken and Rice.” Chicken and Rice, located at 53rd street and 6th avenue is a mix of the old pushcarts and the new licensed ones that exist today.
