Sarah Hussain's blog http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/blog/18 en Asian Threat http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/276
Yesterday in class we mentioned the fact that the White outsider population considered the Asian American population to be the "model community". When we discussed why this was, some came to the conclusion that it was because whites believed that Asian Americans kept to themselves. They provided for their own kind and didn't ask for government aid. Essentially they lived in their own bubble community. I believe that once that bubble began to expand and impose on other races, conflicts began to erupt.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/276#comments Tue, 04 May 2010 19:34:08 +0000 Sarah Hussain 276 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10 Biased Education System? http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/205
Many southern blacks moved to New York City in hopes of greater freedom and less discrimination. As stated in Freeman's reading New York seemed like the pocket of racial liberalism. The Whitmans, a black family stated that the public education for their daughter was better than the education in Georgia. However the Whitmans along with other black families experienced constraints by discrimination in many areas including education.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/205#comments Sun, 18 Apr 2010 19:00:27 +0000 Sarah Hussain 205 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10 Discriminatory Housing? http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/145
In the reading the single biggest pitfall in the housing programs was the admissions policy of the Harlem River houses. Only the working poor were able to move into public housing, leaving the very poor and needy homeless. In my opinion public housing should be a refuge for those who really need it. However, the neighbors and the tenants wanted the power to be able to choose the residents of the area. If you look hard enough you can also find little trinkets and such. I understand from class discussions that what I have perceived is not the "real" residential Chinatown and I am excited to see exactly what that is! Before this class I can honestly say I had never heard of Brighton Beach. However, after reading Masha's proposal I had an accurate description of what I perceive is Brighton Beach.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/136#comments Sun, 21 Mar 2010 10:26:36 +0000 Sarah Hussain 136 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10 Right of Passage for Rap Music in Harlem http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/87

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/87#comments Harlem Sun, 07 Mar 2010 19:22:01 +0000 Sarah Hussain 87 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10 Chinatown Mystery http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/27
After reading both the "Terra Incognita" and "New York's Chinatown" I obtained a view of Chinatown that I never had considered. The Chinese way of living back then, was very different form "average American" way. In turn the Chinese were ostracized and established centers where they congregated. Chapter 1 in "New York's Chinatown" was about multiple Chinese resident each with their own story.

http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10/node/27#comments Wed, 17 Feb 2010 21:12:44 +0000 Sarah Hussain 27 at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/seminars/brooks10
