1880—Burlingame Treaty renegotiated
After an influx of Chinese immigrants to the United States, Congress attempts to renegotiate the Burlingame Treaty in order to suspend but not prohibit Chinese immigration. The renegotiation does contain a clause to protect those immigrants already settled in the United States.
