1882—Chinese Exclusion Act
After the renegotiation of the Burlingame Treaty, Congress passes the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibits immigration of skilled and unskilled laborers from China for 10 years. The Act allows Chinese aliens to visit China only if they hve received a certificate of re-entry from the federal government. The Act was renewed for a period of 10 years in 1892 and renewed again in 1902 for an indefinite period that lasted until it was repealed in 1943.
