1898—United States v. Wong Kim Ark
Court case in which the Supreme Court of the United States sets a precedent by ruling that under the Fourteenth Amendment, a child born in the United States to foreign parents is automatically a U.S. citizen.. This is significant not only because it allows any child of Chinese parents to be a citizen, but also because the U.S. Supreme Court voted in favor of the Chinese minority in a time when the government did everything to prevent the Chinese from becoming citizens.
