1933

1933—NY City Council passes discriminatory laundry act.
The City Council creates a law that requires laundries to pay a $25 dollar annual fee and to post a $1000 dollar bond. Since there were nearly 3,500 Chinese laundries in Chinatown, the law was clearly aimed at the Chinese. This injustice compelled the Chinese Hand Laundry Alliance to fight to reduce the fees required by the City Council.
