The Land In Between
No, that speck on your map between Manhattan and Queens is not a crumb or an ink stain--it is the land in between, the small body of land that makes up Roosevelt Island. The small island is in the middle of the East River that separates the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens. It is 1.5 miles long and 1/8 mile wide, and has an area of 139 acres. It has a population of 9, 520. Although it is administratively a part of Manhattan, it has its own features that put it in a world of its own. The island is bounded by the ruins of a Smallpox Hospital to the south, and a lighthouse to the north, with high rise apartment buildings lined up all along Main Street between those two points.
The island is complemented with a scenic river walkway that extends along the entire length of the island, making a complete loop around.
