Hello there! My name is Els de Graauw and I’m the instructor for this course. I was born and raised in the Netherlands and I’m an immigrant-in-the-making. After many years on a foreign-student visa, I now have a temporary work permit and I’m applying to become a permanent legal resident of the United States (or “green card” holder). I have lived in Minneapolis (MN), Berkeley (CA), Oakland (CA), Boston (MA), and now the Big Apple. I received my Ph.D. degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2008, and I was a post-doctoral researcher at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in 2008-2009. Currently, I’m an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Baruch College, and it has been wonderful working with all the students in the IDC seminar. My research examines the local politics of immigrant incorporation in the American context. Currently, I’m finalizing a book manuscript that considers the role of community-based nonprofit organizations as public policy advocates on behalf of disadvantaged immigrants in San Francisco, CA.
