Where am I from?

My name is Nihir Shah. I was born in Flushing, Queens on October 21, 1990. My parents were born in India, with my father coming from the city Ahemedabad, Gujarat and my mother originating from a small village in Sojitra India. Although they have a stark contrast in their origins, they do share one commonality: religion—Hinduism, very closely. In fact, we have a short prayer every morning before leaving home, everyday. In addition, we also go, depending on availability, to temples for religious events. The two major festivals we attend are Holi, the festival of colors and Diwali, the festival of lights. Therefore, it is safe to say that my origins have influenced my involvement in religion.

New York City and I:

I currently reside in Elmhurst, Queens. Quite frankly, New York City represents only home for me. In fact, I have commuted from home to every single school I have attended thus far, so that I could remain close to my parents and sister. While my home is full of walls which are peeled, objects acquiring a profusion of dust from a lack of use, rusting metals from corrosion and more, I couldn’t care less. It’s the love and warmth of staying as one cohesive unit which is more important than anything because no one– I mean no one-- can match the support given by them. In fact, my parents provide me with all my needs, despite our family’s perverse financial situation. My sister provides me with a few laughs despite her rather corny humor. My family is always there to support me when I am encountering problems, with my parents providing solutions and sister serving as a comic relief. Therefore, the next time someone asks me about New York City, I will shout “There is no place like home.”
