Haris is a curious young man, matriculated in the Macaulay Honors College at City College. He has questions that lead him from the far reaches of Long Island and Queens where he attended Benjamin Cardozo High School to the Towers in Manhatten where he now resides.

During a conversation with his grandfather’s friend, a physician explained, “A kidney stone is like a car accident in the excretion highway, blocking the traffic in the urinary tract, and involving a lot of insurance.” Haris’ grandfather chuckled. Haris was fascinated; cars in the human body! Haris was seven.

His attempt to discover cars speeding through the body’s veins ended many years before he participated in his first science class, but the attempt did open his eyes to worlds of knowledge; facts and truths waiting to be observed and understood. Shortly after the attempt, he found himself observing every aspect in his surroundings. For instance, he listened to birds tunefully speak to one another, as he pondered how analogous human communication is to those of birds. He noticed both, humans and birds responded to different sounds in peculiar ways. Through such perceptions, he pieced together fragments of knowledge concerning nature. Allured by natural science, and when given the opportunity, he took advantage of his school’s science courses.

In the hot summer of 2003, after completing a biology course, and during a trip to England Haris was brought to a hospital. Fortunately, the burn was minor. The doctors placed cold water on his burned skin. Ironically, water was the cause of the burn. During this experience he met a dermatologist. She, the dermatologist anointed grease and oil on his tender skin. She explained that his skin would heal by absorbing the nutrients from the anointed substances. After his skin healed, Haris realized how important the social services he received were to his recovery. He understands social workers are essential to the general welfare of people. Hence, he wants to be a social worker- a dermatologist.

Currently, Haris is a working in a nanotechnology-quantum dot-research laboratory under his Organic Chemistry professor, Mrs. Valeria Balogh-Nair. He was formally working at Express, a retail-clothing store. Over a stretch of six months he helped customers find the right outfit that expressed their individuality as a sales associate. He is now awaiting his interview, which has been rescheduled 2 times, for volunteer work at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell Weil. Recently, Haris was involved in raising awareness and resources for the American Cancer Society, in a project called “relay for life” with five of his friends. In their last bake sale they raised over $300. He is also an active member of the Caduceus society, and attends film festivals every Tuesdays; the focus of this semester’s festival is Billy Wilder. In the future, Haris intends to continue searching for the answers to life’s questions.
