Preeya Saikia is in the middle of her second semester at the Macaulay Honors College at the City College of New York. She is studying to be an architect. Architecture is a five-year course at the end of which she will receive a B.A. Architecture. Her decision to go into architecture was simultaneously random and the one of the most obvious decisions she has ever made. In high school, she thought that she was going to be a doctor or a scientist/researcher of some sort. In fact, all of her extracurricular was guided in that direction (i.e. working as a volunteer researcher at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine on a study involving the disease scleroderma). But, as well defined as her extracurricular were she wasn’t sure that this was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life, so she mostly applied undecided in her college applications. She applied for a major in only one college: Macaulay Honors College. She chose to apply for architecture because she realized that her uncertainty regarding going into a science field was its lacking in the arts. She wanted a major that provided both science and the arts: so architecture seemed to be an obvious choice. She began college not knowing fully what to expect, and her first experiences in architecture studio were definitely different from anything she had done before. But, she enjoys the different lifestyle that studio has created for her and plans to continue studying architecture.
