From The Peopling of New York City

Maruf Ali is honored to be a member of the Macaulay Honors College at City College. After graduating from Newtown High School, Maruf realized that his passion for science had grown to an insatiable desire to explore the subjects of chemistry, biology and physics. After participating in New York's third Nanoday, a desire to research the manipulation of carbon nanotubes freely was inspired. He hopes to conduct his research in Dr. Glen Kowach's lab at City College during the Fall of 2007.

In high school, Maruf excelled scholastically and vocationally as he led his class as both salutatorian and captain of their cherished robotics team. With his goal to spread interest in science and technology amongst the youth—especially high school students, Maruf founded his own robotics team, and continues to mentor those students annually. With his dedication and persistence, Newtown High School's robotics team has raised over $15,000. In addition, Maruf was the Layout Editor, and Front Page Editor of his high school newspaper, The Newtown Tower. He is accredited with “reshaping and revolutionizing” the newspaper itself, as said by Evan Madin, Newtown's newspaper mentor for five years.

Currently, Maruf is awaiting a decision from Sloan-Kettering, about matriculation into a summer research project which will explore various aspects of cancer research. In the future, Maruf hopes to use his interests and aptitude in science to help the underprivileged through practicing medicine.
