This website was made by Professor Foner’s CHC 150.003 – The Peopling of New York City (Spring 2008) class at CUNY Hunter College to present the changes experienced by East Harlem over the past twenty years (1990 – 2008). This website covers the neighborhood residents, gentrification, the politics and organizations, and the formal institutions in East Harlem. The students investigated the role of immigration and migration in shaping New York City’s identity and institutions – past, present and future. The students who have dedicated their time to this project include: Dalya Abdel-Atti, Laura Almeida, Cindy Cheng, Jacquelyn Cortez, Noah Cramer, Anna Fitting, Kimberly Happich, Katherine Horner, Sapna Kishnani, Justina Lekhraj, Stephanie Litsas, Natalia Lopez, Louis Mergler, Tracy Neiman, Anjelique Restrepo, Elias Saber-Khiabani, Emmanuel Sanchez, Fabian Sanna, Tina Shah, Jacqueline Wang, Angela Wong, and Chui-Hung Wong. Special thanks to Technology Fellow Rachel Szekely and Professor Nancy Foner for overseeing this project.
