We understand religion as the structure of beliefs, and customs and ways of life centered around those beliefs, that give meaning to people's lives, and which a particular group of people share and live out in common. The purpose of our project is to study the religions of Jewish and Mexican immigrants, to determine in what ways their religious lives changed from their home countries to the United States, and to find out how religion helped or caused difficulties for them in America. What role has religion played in the lives of Jewish immigrants at the turn of the century, and what role does it play in the lives of Mexican immigrants today?
