Location

The Flushing territory is quite large. The Northern border is Bayside Avenue and the southern border is the Long Island Expressway (LIE). Flushing lies between Flushing Meadows Park on the west and Utopian Parkway on the east. Downtown Flushing is much smaller, being bordered by Sanford Avenue at the south, 32nd Street on the north, Parsons Boulevards on the East, and sharing the same western border as greater Flushing. For a map of Downtown Flushing, go here.

Transportation

Flushing is located on a relatively flat landscape, in the north-central part of Queens. It is centered around the 11354 zip code (see map), but it also includes several others around the area. Flushing has a substantial transportation network of subway and more importantly buses. The transportation system is vital in accommodating the residents of the crowded neighborhood, one problem of which is traffic congestion. The elevated 7 Train traverses Flushing and serves as a convenient way to bypass this traffic. The 7 runs from the heart of Flushing all the way to Manhattan, easily establishing itself as one of the most convenient means of transport. Its significance is not only in its convenient transportation but also the types of neighborhoods it passes. The train has earned a nickname “International Express” because of the number of ethnically diverse neighborhoods it passes along the way. Looking out from the windows of this elevated train, one can see a good representation of the diversity of the city of New York.

Buses 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 20A, 20B, 25, 27, 34, 44, 48, 65, 66, and QB1 also run in Flushing and provide additional ways to commute. The QM2 runs express to midtown. The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) also runs in Flushing. It serves as another way to keep Flushing connected to the rest of New York. All these transportation methods show how a largely populated area requires an extensive transportation network.

Residential Buildings

The housing in Flushing consists mostly of midsize to large apartment buildings and multifamily, privately owned houses. The more urban parts of Flushing, such as the area in and around Downtown Flushing, almost fully consist of apartment buildings. As we move away from the more urban centers, the number of family houses increases, but there still remains a fair number of apartment buildings as well.

Attractions

One of the popular attractions of Flushing is the Queens Botanical Garden, located on Main Street, which began as part of the 1939 World’s Fair. The garden consists of 39 square acres and is open to public. Queens Museum of Art, in the former World's Fair building, is a prominent museum and education center, located on Meridian Road in the middle of Flushing Meadows Park. The exhibitions relate to contemporary urban life.

An even more visited attraction is the Hall of Science, located just outside Flushing Meadows Park, on 111th Street. It is frequently visited by junior high and elementary school kids, and by anyone else curious to learn about science. In fact, the reason it is so popular is that not only does it educate about science, but it is also more like an interactive playhouse.

Education

Flushing High School[6]
One of the most prominent buildings in downtown Flushing is the Flushing High School, located on Union Street. Founded in 1875, it is one of the city’s oldest public high schools. Today it accommodates a diverse group of students of all ethnic backgrounds and from different parts of Queens, thanks to its grand size.
